Are you a quick and accurate typer? If you answered yes, then there is a world of work out there for you to consider!

Authors, scholars, journalists, and others conduct interviews as part of their job. The only problem is that many of them cannot find the time to transcribe their interviews. Well, their problem is your gain! Technology has made it easier for these people to send their digital files to someone else who can transcribe for them.

Verbalink and Scribie outsource files that clients send them to people like you who are qualified to transcribe. Both sites have a "work for us" or a "we are hiring" link that puts you in touch with them. Both charge by the audio minute and your pay can run from $5 to $40/hour depending on the length and complexity of the files you are transcribing.

There are also more specialized companies that hire transcriptionists. SpectraMedi hires for medical transcription work. The specialized transcription agencies typically want someone with some knowledge in the field, so you might need to get certified before they will consider you. You can also call your local college or university to see what you can do to get your name listed as a local transcriber for professors or students who need transcription work done. The best departments to call would be anthropology, sociology, education, and those departments whose work relies on interviews or field work. The secretary who answers the department phone should be able to find out how to add your name to the pool of people available for this line of work.

A Google search with the keywords "transcription services" opens up a wide range of businesses whom you can contact about working from home. So, if you type at lightning speed, then don't waste your talents! After all, fast typing is a talent by which I have wowed many a people. Maybe I should capitalize on that, eh?
